Palácio Guanabara

O Palácio Guanabara localiza-se na Rua Pinheiro Machado, no bairro de Laranjeiras , na zona sul da cidade do Rio de Janeiro.

Residência de um português durante os anos 1860, tornou-se o lar da Princesa Isabel e de seu esposo o Conde d’Eu. Nessa época, o acesso ao palácio era feito pela Rua Paissandu, que por essa razão foi ornada com uma centena de palmeiras imperiais. Pertenceu ao casal de origem real até a Proclamação da República (1889), quando foi confiscado pelo governo militar e transferido ao patrimônio da União.

O palácio foi utilizado pelo presidente-ditador Getulio Vargas como residência oficial durante o Estado Novo (1937 a 1945). A partir de 1946, passou a sediar a Prefeitura do antigo Distrito Federal. Nos anos de 1960, quando foi criado o Estado da Guanabara, passou a ser a sede do governo do Estado. Entretanto, só na segunda metade dos anos 1970 é que passou a ser propriedade do Estado.

A partir da fusão dos estados da Guanabara e do Rio de Janeiro, passou a ser utilizado como sede do governo do novo Estado do Rio de Janeiro, condição que se mantém até os dias de hoje.

Observação: a residência oficial do governador do Estado do Rio de Janeiro é o Palácio Laranjeiras situado no mesmo bairro.

Guanabara Palace

The Guanabara Palace is located at Rua (street) Pinheiro Machado, in Laranjeiras neighborhood, on the South side of the Rio de Janeiro city.

Residence of a portuguese, during the years 1860, it became the home of Princess Isabel and her husband the Count d'Eu. At this time, the access to the Palace was done by Paissandu Street, which for this reason has been adorned with a few hundred of Imperial Palms. Belonged to the couple of Royal origin until the Republic proclamation (1889), when it was confiscated by the military Government and transferred to the patrimony of the Union.

The Palace was used by President-dictator Getúlio Vargas as official residence during the New State (1937 to 1945). In 1946, became the headquarters of the City Hall from the Federal District. In the years 1960, when was created the State of Guanabara, became the seat of the State Government. However, only in the second half of the years 1970 who happened to be owned by the State.

From the merger of the States of Guanabara and Rio de Janeiro, began to be used as the seat of Government of the new State of Rio de Janeiro, condition that remains to this days.

Note: the official residence of the Governor of Rio de Janeiro State is the Laranjeiras Palace, who is situated in the same neighbourhood.
