· na orla do oceano atlântico: São Conrado, Vidigal, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana e Leme;
· os bairros da Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Jardim Botânico, Gávea, Laranjeiras, Cosme Velho, Catete e Humaitá, que não são banhados pelo mar;

South zone of Rio de Janeiro

South zone is the geographic region of the city of Rio de Janeiro located between the massif of Tijuca, the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Guanabara. It is composed mainly by neighborhoods that are located:

· in the Atlantic Ocean fringe: São Conrado, Vidigal, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana and Leme;
· the neighbourhoods of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Jardim Botânico, Gávea, Cosme Velho, Laranjeiras, Humaitá, Catete that aren't bordering by the sea;
· and neighborhoods limited by Guanabara Bay: Botafogo, Flamengo, Urca and Glória

In this region are the main beaches and hotels of the city. There are too, the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (Rodrigo de Freitas Laggon), the Parque Nacional da Tijuca (National Park of Tijuca, the greatest forrest in urban region of the world), the Morro do Pão de Açúcar (Hill of Sugar Loaf), with its cable car (the so-called "Sugar Loaf Tram"), the Corcovado, where lies the famous statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ Redeemer), as well as other natural wonders and tourist attractions. Is the noblest and richest region of the city, being visited by thousands of tourists coming from other Member States and from various parts of the world during the entire year.

The development of the South zone of Rio de Janeiro was motivated by the arrival of the King D.João VI and his Portuguese court in 1808, when the city's population grows from 60,000 to 500,000 inhabitants. The Court preferred to follow the North direction towards São Cristóvão and Tijuca, while the diplomatic corps and the British chose the South zone, where there were only fishermen's villages.

The people born in Rio de Janeiro city are called carioca. The cariocas of South zone are different from average of Brazilians, being relaxed and playful. For them the beach is a lifestyle, whose fashion and culture spread through the rest of the country.

The cariocas loves to stay on the beach without doing anything, sunning, talking with the friends, drinking a cold beer or coconut water, refreshing every hour at sea or practicing some beach sport.

There are many beach sports. We have the footvolley and the beach tennis, sports invented by cariocas. The first is a game of beach volleyball performed with the feet and head. The second is a kind of tennis game played with racquets entirely made of wood and a rubber ball. We also have volleyball, beach soccer, "altinho", body board and surf.

After the beach is common the carioca put a t-shirt and shorts and stop in various bars to take some drinks and appetizers. Almost overnight, cariocas goes to lunch at home or in the many restaurants scattered throughout the South zone of the city.

At night, the cariocas goes at some bar to take drinks and to continue the conversation with the friends.

The nature of the Rio make the city lush and beautiful, with its green mountains of tropical forest, rocky outcrops, which seem to emerge from within the sea, and its beaches of white sand.

Many Brazilians think that carioca doesn't work, but the reality is that it works and it works enough to keep the State and city in the category of second largest economies in the country.

According to some beach "philosophers", the important thing is to program your life and be fast in its activities to left time to enjoy the beach. It is common, for example, young people going to surf with the sunrise to later go to school or bring a suit to work. Already, on weekends is sacred, is all day at the beach.

For the carioca more attentive, the transformations in the nature of the city can determine also the times of the year. There is a time when the amendoeira (called almond tree) change the colors of their leaves, creating an artificial atmosphere of autumn in full heat of a tropical region.

There is also the time when the Sabiá Laranjeira (a bird) breeds singing with joy and welcoming a new generation that is approaching. Its singing was immortalized by Machado de Assis in his work, when said "my land has palm trees where sing the sabiá, the birds that here singing don’t singing like there".

Or the time when the ipês trees flourish, spotting the green forest of yellow or pink. Or the time that abound the sword fish in Arpoador, with its shining silvery when they are taken from the sea by dozens of fishermen who run to the place. Or the times of mullets in winter with their yummy roe to be enjoyed fried, seasoned only with lemon, to accompany a caipirinha or a cold beer. Or even the time of the sea swallows (called thirty cents), passing through the beaches in their annual migration. Or the penguins that come swimming in cold sea currents and exhausted end up landing on the coast of the State of Rio.

The coastline of Rio de Janeiro has many seabirds. Every day from early morning, comes from the archipelago of Cagarras a huge flock of frigates, which is gliding above the beaches looking for food and taking advantage of the thermal currents. Along the shore are flying many gulls and atobás looking for fish, giving precise dives in their fisheries.

This is the environment where the carioca is created.
